Tour Divide Diary Day 32, to the end of the trip…..
So this bit just ties up the rest of the trip, essentially we were killing time till our flight back. The right hand side of my face had swollen right up and the toothache got so bad I had to give in and visit a dentist, who told me he could sort it out for $4000! Having had a root filling before in the UK I knew I could get it done at home for about an eighth of that, so I took a chance and got $30 worth of antibiotics in stead, in a couple of days it was almost back to normal.
So with a few days left to kill we decided to relax, Flagstaff was actually a pretty cool place and much coffee and many donuts were consumed. We found a great campground on Route 66 and used that for a base.
As we were “just down the road” from the Grand Canyon we decided we had to visit. As we had proven to be so crap at dealing with the high temperatures again I pulled Tom out of the tent and put him in the car in his sleeping bag, we had a quick breakfast in McDonalds at Tusayan and were actually in the car park at 09:00 walking across to the rim. It was truly incredible and I spent most of the time walking around there dreaming of the AZT, trying to spot the trails zig zagging down to the canyon floor. Although with the power of hindsight from this trip I know that I’d be way better off touring it than trying to race.
Soon enough though it was time to head to Phoenix for the flight home. We got a cheap motel and proceeded to dump all our stuff out the car and into the room. A visit to target for several reels of duct tape and we reassembled the boxes.
Amazingly, with the various extra bits we’d picked up, we managed to package it all together and get it sealed up. Now we just had the minor problem of getting it to the airport. We took the car back a day early and swapped it for a MPV which comfortably swallowed the whole lot for the trip back.
