Purbeck Loop

Franks Tank

We made our yearly pilgrimage to Purbeck, we’ve got a couple of different routes that we mix and match when we make the trip west and this time, thanks to Pete, there was a new cafe to investigate too, which is always an important part of any excursion!!

Unlike previous trips we took the car over on the chain ferry and actually started our route from Swanage. The downside of this of course means that you’ve got the stonking great Ballard Down climb straight out the gate. Still, I suppose it gets you warmed up quickly!

A long trail along the cliff top and a quick stop to look at Old Harry Rocks gives some great views, before dropping down to Studland. We went to look at Agglestone Rock and then headed out across the golf course in search of singletrack. The trail down to Frank’s Tank is a lot of fun with plenty of ruts, rocks and drops to deal with.

After that I was beginning to get HANGRY so we headed to Arne and the new cafe there, what better way to replenish calories than with scones, jam and fresh cream? Very nice. We rode down to the end of the trail to look at the harbour, agreeing that it would be a rather awesome bivvy spot.

After that we set our sights on Corfe Castle and made our towards it. Through Norden Farm camp site and into the woods there is some sweet singletrack and this time round it was pretty dry and fast. After that it’s time to climb up onto the ridge and the switchback road up to Stonehill Down certainly tests the legs.

A short road section and it was back onto a stonking great climb on the way to Swyre Head. The sun really put in an appearance and the early evening light was fantastic. This made the last few miles back into Swanage a lot of fun and we got back tired and happy.

Purbeck delivered again, great views, fun trails and a top cafe!
